
If a file in the bottom layer is no longer required, then a higher layer creates what they call a whiteout file, typically having a. A oddity is when you want to delete a file. So despite the main puppy sfs being read only, you can in effect make modifications to a file and have those changes persist.

Most of the layers are read only (you can't easily change files in a sfs - not without expanding the entire file system, making the change and then rebuilding a new copy of the filesystem). If a file in the bottom (main) layer has another version in a higher layer, then that higher layer copy of the file takes precedence (shines through).

If nothing is written on the closer panes then you see right through to what was written on the furthest/deepest pane of glass. So in effect the main Puppy sfs is at the bottom and other sfs's can be loaded on top of that, which are like panes of glass layered on top of each other and where whatever is written on the pane of glass closest to you is what is seen, which may be different to what was written on panes of glass below that. Puppy fundamentally works by layering those filesystems on top of each other. I picture sfs's (squashed file systems) as complete filesystems all contained within a single compressed (squashed) file. The ' zdrv_xenialpup64_7.5.sfs' file is the additional firmware 'module' this gets layered into the main file-system at boot, and permits you to change the firmware if needed (which is very rare, TBH). The ' puppy_xenialpup64_7.5.sfs' file is the main Puppy file. Basically, you don't delete either of those Xenialpup SFS files they're both part of what makes Puppy work.
